According to the Department of Labor, the following are the current statistics in the state. Arizona’s unemployment rate, seasonally adjusted stands at 7.7 percent as of July of 2012. This shows improvement since July of 2010 when the unemployment rate was at 10.7 percent. According to the Office of Employment and Population Statistics, a component of the Arizona Department of Administration, the agency expects the state to see a growth rate of 4.3 percent in jobs over 2012 and 2013. That is an increase of 102,900 jobs. 47,100 jobs in 2012 are likely while that number climbs to 55,800 in 2013. Nonfarm employment increase alone will account for about two percent in 2012 and 2.3 percent in 2013.
Where Growth Will Take Place
In terms of where this growth will come from, the agency predicts the following for over-the-year change annually for 2012.
- Manufacturing should see an increase of about 2 percent.
- Natural resources and mining will see an increase of about 1.5 percent
- Construction will grow by 5.2 percent.
- Professional and business services will grow by 2 percent.
- Educational and health services will increase by 2.9 percent.
- Leisure and hospitality services will increase by 3.5 percent.
To the Future
What about the future of employment in Arizona? There is evidence that improvement in jobs will continue. There are talented professionals here and some companies are taking note of this and bringing their businesses to the state.
With a strong population of individuals with the skills and a growth population, many industries are coming into Arizona. There are expected economic gains present, though there are still domestic issues that could hold back the economic conditions of the state considerably. This is about in line with the rest of the country. Factors that could negatively affect these numbers include the rising cost of petroleum and potential military conflict in the Persian Gulf. Public debt continues to be a factor as well.
